I was among a handful of artists selected by Alessandro Michele for Gucci's ongoing Instagram initiative. I was commissioned to create a piece celebrating their 2015 Bloom pattern.
The tranquil darkness of outdoor terrains is jolted awake with white texts bearing unambiguously dreary omens like, “WE ALL DIE” and “I WILL BREAK MY OWN HEART.” Looming vertical oceans and mountains suspended in air over their own earthly reflections reflect a world that might collapse on itself at any moment. In photo manipulations that defy the laws of nature and of social propriety alike, the American graphic designer Victoria Siemer, more widely known as @witchoria joins text with geography to create landscapes that exist on the border between dream and existential nightmare. Her Instagram feed functions as an artistic riff on a motivational Pinterest board, its messages of inevitable crisis and failure paired with images of loss and destruction rather than sunsets and platitudes. These pieces do not aggregate into a sad collection so much as a lively one, empowered to move forward despite the grimness of so much difficult reality. @witchoria's #GucciGram remix of the #GGBlooms pattern joins an extensive body of work featuring geometric shapes suspended in air above the landscapes that they reflect. The floral pattern coats a scene of rippling sand dunes, defying their parched fate and breathing life into the desert terrain. See more talents through link in bio. Text by @alanakm
